In this Tutorial we will be learning how to draw a ear when we look from the front. Only part of the ear will be visible. If you are drawing a potrait which is slightly facing side way, then this is how mostly an ear look like. It is good to practice this, and i have tried to explain this step by step.
Step 1: As a first step you need to draw a curve as shown in the image below. One single line a curve more like a Capital C. It is a good practice to have your initial lines little light. It is better to use a 2H pencil so the lines will be light.
Step 2: Now in the next step you have to draw some interior lines. One interesting thing about drawing ears is it need not be as accurate as drawing eyes, nose or lips or any other part of the face, it may not spoil the face. But it is always good to make your drawing perfect. In this step you need to draw lines inside the C line another 2 more curves which will give a look of the ears.
Step 3: In this step you will need to give some light and shade. The light in this image is falling from the front of the face. So the shadows will be inside the ears. When drawing shades you need to do it slowly, from dark part to the light part. You will learn how to draw light and shade in a separate tutorial later.
Step 4: In this step you have to give little more dark shades. Observe carefully when the light falls on the front of the face, the dark part of the ear are not getting adequate light. You need to bring that effect by using shades. You can us a 4B pencil to shade this part.
Step 5: Next step you need to give more shade as shown in the image. When you read theoretically step after step it may look very exhaustive. However, over a period of time and practice you will automatically start getting the flow. You will draw this with ease.
Step 6: Continue to shade and make the ear little more darker. Shading perfectly will show the ups and downs in the ear to show a sort of 3 dimensional image. Remember where the light falls from and that will keep you conscious how shades need to be.
Step 7: In this step you need to draw shade for the hair, slightly above the ear. Also draw little more shade inside the ear. This will give more natural look for the drawing. Draw slowly and keep continuing to shade till you get image like below.
Step 8: In the last step of drawing a right ear front view you need to draw thicker line on the border of the ears. It is not necessary to do that, but it will give a much reality for the image. It makes the image stand outside from the paper.
